Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact, combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Overview

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. It teaches that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger opponent by using leverage and proper technique by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person.

The benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are far reaching and will touch every aspect of your life. Through BJJ, you will begin to understand yourself, on and off the mats, in ways you never imagined. You will test your limits and become the best you can be. At Chimera MMA, we respect that each student has their own goals and we want to support you in reaching them. The more you train, the better you will become and the more completely you will reach your true potential in life.

BJJ is for anyone who wants to learn how to defend him or herself in combat, in the cage, on the mats or out on the street. What most people don’t know is that BJJ will also allow you to apply those same principles to fighting the daily battles of life, like weight loss, stress, relationship issues, and self-confidence. You will learn how to think through problems more constructively than before.

Come and join a team that will support you in your quest for self-improvement. Training the techniques and participating in live training sessions, with your partners and coaches, will give you an arsenal of weapons at your disposal whenever you should need them. The more you train, the more you will arm yourself with knowledge and skills to fight all your battles in life… like a black belt.

Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

What do I need?

All you need to get started are some comfortable workout clothes. A fitted t-shirt and shorts will work best if you’ve never trained BJJ before. It is recommended that you wear any shorts that do not have buttons, zippers, etc. (board shorts, athletic shorts, etc.) and a compression shirt (UnderArmor, etc.). Any loose clothing will complicate your BJJ training since it gets caught and tied up during drills.

Do I need a Gi or Kimono?

Yes, but not for your first few classes. To become more technical you will eventually want to start training in a gi. Team gi’s are available for purchase.

Will I get a belt?

Yes. Every Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student starts as a white belt. After 50 classes (about 6 months) you’ll earn your first stripe. There are 4 stripes per belt. It typically takes 1 – 2 years to earn your Blue Belt.

What is a typical class like?

A typical class will start with BJJ specific warmup drills followed by stretching. After you’re warm, we’ll dive into technique training, usually covering 2-4 techniques. We’ll begin to wrap up our training with technique drills to help enforce the technique covered in the class. We’ll finish with some light sparring (which is always optional) which will help develop confidence in your skill and ability.

Do I have to compete?

Yes and no! Competition is not a requirement for promotion, nor will you be forced to compete at any time. However, it has been observed that students who do compete often see a greater improvement in their technical expertise. It has been said, “You will learn more in one tournament than an entire month of training.”

While the rules of a Jiu-Jitsu tournament, or even a mixed martial arts match, do not take into account all the variables that exist in a street fight, we do recognize that these tournaments allow students the opportunity to test their skills while minimizing the risk of injury. Those students who want to test their Jiu-Jitsu proficiency will definitely be encouraged to enter Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling tournaments if they also want to gain true higher levels of recognized proficiency in the art.

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

What are the ages for the Kids BJJ Program?

Children aged 5 – 12 are welcome. Teenagers (13+) are welcome but are encouraged to attend the regular adult classes.

What does my child need?

All you need to get started are some comfortable clothes that they can move around in. A fitted t-shirt and athletic pants will work best to start. It is recommended that you wear pants that do not have buttons or zippers (sweat pants, windbreaker pants, etc.) and a compression shirt (UnderArmor, etc.). Any loose clothing will complicate your child’s BJJ training since it gets caught and tied up during drills.

Do I need to buy my child a Gi or Kimono?

Yes, but not for your first few classes. To become more technical you will eventually want them to start training in a gi. They are also more sanitary and sturdy than regular exercise clothes.

What is a typical class like?

A typical class will start with BJJ specific warmup drills. After we’ve warmed up their bodies and have the blood flowing, we’ll dive into technique training, usually covering 2-4 techniques. We’ll wrap up our training with drills to help enforce the technique covered in the class and finish with a quick review that will help develop confidence in your childs skill and ability.

Do you follow a curriculum?

We have our own curriculum that we’ve developed. We’re focused on what your child will face as a kid in everyday life, such as bully’s at school. How do they get away from a group of kids surrounding them? What do they do if they get put in a headlock? How can they avoid getting backed into a corner or what to do if they do? It’s also important to point out what we won’t teach them. We won’t teach them any chokes that deprive the brain of oxygen. We won’t teach them how to be a bully. Our goal is to create strong, responsible children who are able to defend themselves and others.

Will my kids get a belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitzu?

Yes! Your child will start as a white belt. After 20 classes they’ll be awarded their first stripe. After earning 4 stripes they become eligible for their first belt promotion to Grey/White belt. We follow the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation belt system.

Does my child have to compete?

Yes and no! Competition is not a requirement for promotion and your child will never be forced to compete at any time. However, it has been observed that students who compete often see a greater improvement in their technical expertise. It has been said, “You will learn more in one tournament than an entire month of training.” Plus, it’s fun! Kid’s have a great time. They learn confidence, sportsmanship and earn a sence of individual pride!

While the rules of a Jiu-Jitsu tournament do not take into account all the variables that exist in a street fight, we recognize that these tournaments allow students the opportunity to test their skill while minimizing the risk of injury. Those students who want to test their Jiu-Jitsu proficiency will definitely be encouraged to enter Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and grappling tournaments and we will take great pride in coaching them!

Muay Thai

Overview

Muay Thai (literally meaning, Thai boxing), is a traditional Thai martial art characterized, notably, by its use of elbows and knees. Muay Thai is thus often referred to as the ‘art of eight limbs’, as opposed to other styles which tend to focus primarily on hands and feet. It is a sport-oriented art, the modern rules of which have been influenced by Western boxing, and it is enjoying an impressive recent worldwide growth due to its popularity as a base art for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

As is the case with all forms of martial arts, the workouts that are done, while learning Muay Thai have great benefits for a person. They help increase the speed, agility, strength and cardiovascular endurance of the practitioner. The exercises associated with Muay Thai greatly help in building up the stamina of a person and his overall health and fitness levels will also increase.

For generations, people have learnt this martial art not only for self-defence, but also for physical and moral well-being. It is a good martial art technique that induces fear in the minds of others which is why scores of children and women are learning this invaluable Thai combat sport. Proponents say that they have greatly benefited from Muay Thai as it has taught them virtues such as compassion, patience, endurance, gratitude and honesty.

Muay Thai Class

What do I need?

All you need to get started are some comfortable workout clothes.  A fitted t-shirt and shorts will work best.  It is recommended that you wear any shorts that do not have buttons, zippers, etc. (board shorts, athletic shorts, etc.) and that do not constrict your movement.  A compression shirt (UnderArmor, etc.) is worn by most people but a t-shirt is fine.  Eventually, you will want to purchase an athletic cup and mouth guard.

What is a typical class like?

Before we start any Muay Thai we need to warm our bodies up.  This lowers the risk of injury.  We use many methods to warm up.  Shown here is skipping.  All exercise in the lesson is geared towards Thai Boxing.  Skipping, while being a good cardio-vascular exercise improves co-ordination, balance and improves a boxers footwork.

Some classes are more technical, working on basic skills, some classes are more physical, working on your endurance, resistance, strength, etc, some classes are more specific, working on fighting combinations and counters, with or without partner, and some classes are more intensive, working on all the aspects plus sparring and pad training with instructor, etc!

Come on in and try out a class and see for yourself!  We hope you’ll join our team

MMA FAQ

Is MMA a Good workout?

Absolutely! The beauty of our MMA curriculum is the systematic increase over time in what is required of each student.  In training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai, students will get a full body anerobic workout.  You will be using all the muscles of your arms, legs, torso and core in every class, as well as your mind.  Many students will lose weight and quit smoking.

You will attain the highest form of physical conditioning that all but a few dedicated athletes have attained.  While you do, you will also learn how to defend yourself to a degree you never, ever, thought you could.  Chimera MMA will make you the better than you ever thought you could be.

You can further improve your results by following a diet that works best for you and supplements. Check out www.MuscleHQ.com for great deals on fitness supplements.

Is MMA Training Safe?

Safety is always the greatest concern at Chimera MMA.  While accidental injuries may occur with any athletic activity, all training occurs in a controlled and supervised environment.  Our Instructors and Coaches will not tolerate any unnecessary roughness or unsportsmanlike behavior.

What if I have never trained in a Martial Art before?

The beauty of our program is that it works for everyone.  Our emphasis is on technique.  It’s normal to assume that if you never participated in contact sports, or sports like gymnastics or wrestling, it’s too difficult to start now, or beyond your physical capabilities.  But that’s simply not true.  The original mixed martial art events (including the UFC) were developed by the Gracie family in order to show how relatively small, fragile and skinny Gracie Jiu-Jitsu fighters could effectively defend themselves against bigger and stronger trained professional fighters and martial artists.  Even today one can easily see the influence of Gracie Jiu Jitsu among the world’s best mixed martial artists.
